PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Quick flu diagnosis and treatment is the name of the game for a local hospital when it comes to swine flu.
They're fast-tracking patients through a separate location. It's called a regional flu center and on Day One, it was already making a difference Monday.
Sheila Belcher is a nurse accustomed to all types of illnesses. But, at least for now, she's specializing in one -- the flu.
“When you come in, you stop at registration and sign in," Belcher said. "Then, there are patient rooms similar to your doctor’s office where a doctor will meet with you and run some tests.”
It is the new Regional Flu Center sponsored by the Pikeville Medical Center. It's a 24/7 separate clinic designated for anyone sick with flu or flu-like symptoms.
“We thought it would be a good idea to separate those who are sick from the regular hospital population," said Jerry Johnson, chief operating officer. "Plus, it’s quicker for them to go to an outpatient facility.”
On day one, more than 50 patients already have passed through the doors. The biggest benefits -- lowering crowds at the hospital ER and protecting other patients not already sick with the flu.
The regional flu center will remain open until the end of flu season. Patients are encouraged to visit their regular family doctor, if they have one. If patients have severe respiratory symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, they should report directly to the hospital.
