CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Changing the way football is played in West Virginia is being seen as a way to help the state's smaller high schools keep the game alive.

The state chapter of the National Football Foundation has approached the West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission about creating eight-player football teams for schools with enrollments below 150 students.

Hannan High School coach Dave Barr says the switch would help schools like his, which has less than 150 students in grades nine through 12.

The Mason County school only has 12 players for its 11-player team. So far this season, the team's record is 0-9.

Commission Executive Director Gary Ray says he hasn't looked at the group's proposal, but creating eight-player teams would have to be studied.

Zoning is never going to happen in Mason Co. The BOE would be afraid of the backlash. Hannan is a good school with a big heart, unfortunately there are few schools left that are small because of consolidation. As far as the first comment, about saying they should move to the city, you are very unrealistic and appear to have some hateful grudge against Hannan or small communities. So, you stay in your city and we'll stay in our beautiful rural area. This proposed change won't hurt you, so what's the problem? Children in rural communities have just as much interest and right to play football as those in cities. Are you mad because your son didn't make the cut when he tried out? Are you mad because our kids aren't turned away and everyone is welcome to play? Maybe you should move to the country!.

I agree, Mason County needs to be zoned however the problem at HHS is everyone thinks it is fun to lose and the parents want nothing more therefore the students want nothing more. What is it teaching your child that he/she can be the best when you are keeping them from the real world. Grow up zone the county and parents at HHS get over it, you are the reason HHS is in the bad shape it is in...yes the parents,...What does it mean that your son plays the entire football game? or is the number 1 player when there is only 12.. You are not helping your children.

I also graduated from Hannan. If the BOE would Zone Mason county Hannan would have more than enough players to play instead of letting our students go to Milton and Pt Pleasant. Also hire coaches who are community based and care more for the kids and less about their own agendas. You have to coach what talent you have and what works ,not just a set of plays a bigger schools runs and expect them to work .There are enough kids at Hannan to have a competive team with the proper scheduling and coaches.
