BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) -- Rate increases have boosted toll collections on the West Virginia Turnpike by more than 30 percent.
Figures released Thursday show the turnpike collected $19 million in tolls from July to September, compared to $14.6 million during the same period in 2008. The rate increases went into effect Aug. 1.
Manager Greg Barr told the Parkways, Economic Development and Tourism Authority that toll collections are meeting projections, despite a decline in commercial truck traffic.
Barr says passenger car toll collections rose by 7.2 percent during the three-month period, while commercial truck toll collections dropped by 11.1 percent.
Barr attributed the decline in commercial truck traffic to the economy.

Take the Sharon Exit and get back on at Chelyan no toll for meeeeee......
Lets blame it on the economy as to why the good citizens of this and other states that use the Turnpike have seen the largest increase in per capita cost of the rate hike. Economy is bad, so let's be sure this rate hike sticks this time even though we are reporting it hurts the average Joe/Jane just trying to get to work to provide for their family! Do not be misled, Commercial truck traffic is using exits prior to and entrances following toll stations. This is resulting in two lane roads being used by commercial trucks with drivers unaccustomed to such underdesigned roads.
What is the toll fee now?
