MOREHEAD, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Massive drug sweep operations in eastern Kentucky, including the recent "Operation Flamingo Road," have brought close scrutiny to the area.
The aftermath of the cut in drug supply produced an onslaught at area drug treatment centers. There's a new trend in treatment -- what may be the addict's true alternative to a life on drugs.
For people such as Billy Litz, Dustin Simmons and the nearly 60 clients now living at the Morehead Inspiration Center, their lives have been in and out of detox, rehab and prison.
"I got divorced, got hooked on drugs, went to prison, got out -- six months later I was back in for drinking," Simmons said.
Demand at drug treatment centers increased dramatically after "Operation Flamingo Road."
"We went from eight calls a day to 40," said Tony White, program director at the Morehead Inspiration Center.
White said serious addiction can take two to five years to treat, and there's no time limit for treatment at the inspiration center. The drug free plan there highlights peer led trial and error lessons in taking responsibility for one's own life.
In the two-year history of the Morehead Inspiration Center, the program director says an amazing 60 percent of those who've left the program have stayed clean and sober.
The Morehead Inspiration Center is one of several long-term facilities involved in the growing "Recovery Kentucky" program.
