The Ohio State Highway patrol says an off-duty Gallia County, Ohio, sheriff's deputy was killed in a head-on accident Tuesday afternoon.

It happened on State Route 160 near mile post nine just before 2pm. According to a news release from the OSHP, Jimmy Laws, 48, of Bidwell, was heading north on SR-160 in a pickup truck and crossed the center line when his left-front tire blew out, hitting a car driven by Brian Porter, 38, of Gallipolis.

Porter, a Gallia County Sheriff's deputy who was off duty at the time of the accident, was pronounced dead at Holzer Hospital.

Laws was taken by helicopter to Cabell Huntington Hospital. There were two passengers in Law's pickup: five-year old Yahshua Peaks was taken to Children's Hospital in Columbus; and 47 year-old Ramona Mitchell was not hurt, according the release.

Investigators say there was heavy damage to Porter's 1992 Mercury Topaz.

This is the second rural fatal crash in Gallia County so far this year.
