People in South Charleston may have noticed a foul smell in the air Tuesday morning. Officials at Dow Chemical say the plant leaked less than fifty pounds of an amine from its Alkanolamines unit Tuesday morning . The chemical is used to treat water, fabrics, and gas.
The company says the chemical is not harmful to breath in small quantities like released on Tuesday, the worst part is the odor. Officials say the release happened when the temperature rose too high in a distillation column between 6:30am and 7:30am Tuesday. But the problem was quickly fixed.
