A soldier from Putnam County was killed during combat in Iraq over the weekend.

According to a news release from the Department of Defense, Private Michael Slater, 19, of Scott Depot died Saturday after his vehicle rolled over during combat operations. It happened in Taji, Iraq.

Slater was assigned to the 407th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.

Slater's father, Chuck Slater, is the softball coach at Winfield High School. Michael graduated last year.

Slater's cousin tells WSAZ he's only been in Iraq for two weeks--and that he's wanted to join the military for years.
