Friends say they just thought it was another fight because they'd seen the couple fight before.
But this time a fight sent one person to the intensive care unit and the other to jail.
The confusion started around eleven on Tuesday night...first 911 calls indicated that a man was hit on I-77 near the Leon Sullivan Way exit in Charleston...then there were reports that a woman was shot and had jumped out of a car.
But when the sun came up on Wednesday, police realized everything had actually started on the city’s East End near the corner of Jackson and Ruffner.
Lawrence Kelly says he was sitting on his porch talking with his friend Beatrice Warrington when her boyfriend Jerry Daniels arrived. Kelly says, “He threw her in a head lock and drug her off the porch and I said hey hey, and he said you stay out of it before you get hurt…he knocked her to ground and forced her into the car, she was still resisting him and he used his feet to kick her and push her up into the car.”
Aaron James with the police department says, “We believe she was trying to go and he locked and held her in the vehicle, and shortly after she was found on the interstate.”
Late on Wednesday, police caught up with Jerry Daniels. Daniels told us after he was arraigned that he didn't push his girlfriend out of the car -- he says she jumped. He also says he hopes she's okay, but it's her family who is standing by her side as she fights for her life at CAMC general.
No bond was set for Daniels and his preliminary hearing is set for next week. If he's ultimately convicted, he could spend from ten to thirty years in prison.
