Patrick Patterson Signs with UK

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) - Huntington High School basketball star Patrick Patterson is staying close to home.

He's decided to play college ball just a couple of hours away -- at the University of Kentucky.

The six-foot-eight power forward made his announcement Wednesday at a news conference at Huntington High's gymnasium.

Patterson was one of the last highly touted prospects to sign during the month-long signing period, which ends today.

Six Division One teams courted Patterson: Duke, Florida, Kentucky, Virginia, Wake Forest and West Virginia.

But last week he narrowed his choices to Duke, Florida and Kentucky.

Patterson helped lead the Highlanders to an unprecedented three-straight Class Triple-A championships, the last one with the help of O-J Mayo. The two led the team to a 25-and-2 record and a national ranking this past season.

Patterson's senior year was his best. He had 17 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots per game.

He was the state's 2006 Player of the Year and finished second to Mayo this year.
