PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (AP) -- Animal shelter operators say pets with black or dark fur traditionally are the last to be adopted.
So in a twist on Black Friday, the Humane Society of Parkersburg held its own version of the shopping-driven day. The society set aside Friday with a special adoption offer for black or dark-colored cats and dogs.
Each one adopted came with no fees charged.
The society's Mary Ann Hollis said the shelter had a good day with 175 people coming through the doors and 27 dogs, puppies, cats and kittens being adopted. All but five were black or brown on some other dark color.
Hollis said the public was lined up outside the shelter when it opened.

Please, if you get a pet, be able to afford it. We have 5 dogs and 5 cats, 2 by choice. The rest were drop offs due to where we live, We took them in, to the vet, had them fixed. They eat, sleep and live in pleasure. However, it isnt fair to get a animal let it love u then drop it off. They dont know where they are or how to act. One of our cats, looked like she was thrown from a car, and had road rage fur burn. Shame on you. IF you want a animal, please be able to afford to feed it, fix it and take care of it. We are lucky we can. If we couldnt somehow we would. I love animals, but sometimes too many is just too many, which is why every animal we have is neutered. (Like some People should be!)
To Tammy: You have too many cats. I bet your neighbors just love you.
I have had a black cat for 18 years along with many other black/dark cats along the way. They are the best. I have a missing black cat. He gives kisses, and looks exactly like the one in the picture. He's missing from Boone county so if anyone knows of a cat that someone took off or any info on where he could be find me on myspace under shindigfanatic. He loves attention and demands it! He has been neutered but still has half a ball...well maybe 1/4th lol He purrs loudly and has long black hair with long black hairs coming out of his ears like a bobcat. I don't know why anyone would look at the color of a cat to choose their cat. If they are going to be like that, then they will miss out on the best cats they could ask for and really don't deserve to be a cat owner. I have 5 cats 3 are black/tortoise, 1 calico and one orange. Are people afraid if they get a black cat they'll have bad luck? LOL
