WHEELING, W.Va. (AP) - Wheeling Island Racetrack and Gaming Center is wasting no time capitalizing on the referendum vote allowing table games in Ohio County.
The track announced today it will start hiring dealers for casino-style games like poker and blackjack this week. One job fair is scheduled for Wednesday, and another for Saturday.
General Manager Bob Marshall says the track will hire more than 300 dealers and up to 200 employees in other fields.
The track also wants to begin construction on a poker room as early as tomorrow morning. Table games are expected to be in operation by October First.
Opponents of table games have said they'll closely watch to see if the track hires as many new employees as it has predicted.
Voters in Ohio County approved table games by a margin of roughly two-to-one. In Jefferson County, though, a similar measure failed yesterday.
