A mayoral candidate in the town of Hurricane says he's the target of slander.

Someone is sending fliers in the mail with personal attacks against Scott Edwards and his family.

“I lost 40 campaign signs and my name was spray painted off some of them,” mayoral candidate Scott Edwards said.

Edwards said one flier got personal with detailed family and business information that he said were lies.

Edwards said the Secretary of State's Fraud Division is investigating the first flier sent out a few weeks ago, because the disclaimer said paid for by candidate Edwards, which Edwards said is obviously not the case.

Campaign material must be identified to see if it's legitimate or not.

Ben Beakes with the Secretary of State’s Office said the penalty for falsifying a disclaimer is a $500 fine and/or one year in jail.

Both of Edwards’ opponents said they had absolutely nothing to do with the fliers sent out to Hurricane residents.
