HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- An approaching winter storm Friday had some people scrambling to help local charities.

Meanwhile, the need is as much as 20 percent greater than this time last year, and the donations are down.

This weekend is the deadline for the Salvation Army's Angel Tree program, which provides gifts for children who otherwise would not receive anything. In Lincoln County, W.Va., alone, more than 100 names never were pulled from the trees.

In Chesapeake, Ohio, a community center that helps the people of Lawrence County has several food baskets to be distributed during the weekend. Its volunteers are urging people to consider a simple donation that could make a big difference to families coming in this weekend looking for help.

I just wanted to tell of an incident that happened at our company. I work in home care where we send aides to homes. One aide came back one day furious, I asked her what was wrong and she told me that the client she had that day went to the Salvation Army and got toys for Christmas and was mad because she didn't think she got enough toys and food. She felt like they should have done more for her. That is when I stopped donating, I will give personally to a person in need that really needs it but never again to an organization. They really need to screen the people that comes in. Some people live off everyone else and never have to support themselves and then their children learn that system and so it goes on and on.

That rambling about Bush...When Bush was in office, I did not know one person out of work. I am working 30 hours a week now and know many laid off people. The election and the worlds fear of the greatest free enterprise going toward socialism caused the economy to collapse. If the election would not have happened we would not have spent trillions of dollars borrowed from China. We would be going along our merry way. Sorry but that is the truth.

I think there should be a limit of the number of years in a row that you can request gifts for your kids. I hear the same people asking every year. Article said request up 20 percent. I say start with those that haven't ever asked before and give what is left to those that ask every year without fail.
