FRANKFORT, Ky. (WSAZ) -- The state of Kentucky is getting tough on troublesome bears -- at least if one state lawmaker has his way.
Democratic Representative Rick Nelson of Middlesboro is proposing legislation that would allow people to shoot dangerous bears without fear of prosecution if they come within 30 yards of homes.
It's currently illegal to shoot a bear in Kentucky, although the state earlier this month tried a two day bear hunting season in three southern counties.
Southeastern Kentucky has seen a rising number of run-ins with bears as their populations grow.
