GREENUP, Ky. (WSAZ) -- During the first week of the new year and during some of the coldest weather of the season, thousands of people are facing having their utilities shut off for lack of payment.
A community action organization in Kentucky is in crisis mode starting Monday to help people keep the lights on and, more importantly, to stay warm.
The Northeast Kentucky Community Action is helping get the money to people who need it. People lined up beginning early Monday morning at a Greenup office, trying to avoid the shut-office notice that's looming back home.
If you need help, it's important to stress that funding is available on a first come, first serve basis.
Last year, the Northeast Community Action Agency actually provided financial help to more than 10,000 households in five counties.
If you live in Kentucky and want more information, you can contact: Community Action Kentucky at 800-456-3452. Someone there can direct you toward help in your specific town or county.

myself and my husband both work decent jobs, when we tried for assistance we were turned down, unless you have a disconnect notice or a bill that is late by two months, they wont help. Now that is sad.
Sure, if it was so easy to instantly get a job, then I'd do so. In my case, I am a college student driving to Ironton every day and my mother is disabled. Getting a job has proven to be difficult. Keep your snark comments to yourself. Me and my mother are attempting to apply for this, so we hope it will help.
OR MAYBE THEY ARE SINGLE PARENTS THAT DO WORK BUT DO NOT MAKE ENOUGH TO PAY THEIR ELETRIC BILLS THIS TIME OF THE YEAR. OR MAYBE THEY HAVE LOST THEIR JOBS DO TO DOWNSIZING AND CANNOT FIND ANOTHER JOB BECAUSE NO ONE IS HIRING RIGHT NOW. MAYBE YOU NEED TO THINK BEFORE YOU START JUDING PEOPLE.
