HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) - A Cabell County woman has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of her two-year-old nephew, whose body was dumped into the Ohio River.
Twenty-nine-year-old Tonya Sloan of Salt Rock admitted that she slammed Hevin Dakota Jenkins into the bathtub because he'd messed his pants.
Sloan entered her guilty plea Tuesday in Cabell County Circuit Court and was sentenced to 40 years in prison -- the maximum sentence possible for that charge.
As part of the plea agreement, a second charge of first-degree murder for failing to render medical aid resulting in death was dropped.
Prosecutor Chris Chiles says since the toddler's body was never found, it would be impossible to prove how he died.
Sloan originally told authorities her nephew was kidnapped, then said he died after a medical emergency.
Chiles says the murder is believed to have occurred on or about December 15th, 2005, while Sloan was babysitting.
Sloan's former boyfriend, Anthony Milam, pleaded guilty last week to a misdemeanor charge of being an accessory after the fact in the child's death. He admitted driving Sloan to the spot where she disposed of the body.
Milam faces up to a year in jail when sentenced July 30th.
