CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- This month, the YWCA in Charleston will launch a support group for interracial families.
According to a news release from the association, this type of support is lacking in West Virginia. In the 2000 U.S. Census, 6.8 million people reported being more than one race.
"My response is always kind and informative, but the question itself is sometimes part of the reason they need support," YWCA Racial Justice Coordinator Nell Fleming said. "If you don’t know why or don’t think we need support, you haven’t walked in our shoes."
The Women with Biracial Children Support Group will be held on the third Monday of each month from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the YWCA O'Conoor-Autz Room at 1114 Quarrier Street in downtown Charleston.
The group is for mothers or female guardians raising biracial or multiracial children who need support dealing with identify development, child rearing, racism, discrimination and other issues unique to caregivers with multiracial children.
The first monthly support group is set for January 18. Childcare will be available on site for $5/hour per child.
Organizers say several topics will be discussed, including identity development, diversity in neighborhoods, school and churches, and dealing with racist family members.
"As beautiful as it is to live in a diverse society with interracial, interfaith, and multi-cultural families, there are times that it is necessary to converse with folks who share your experiences without judgment, pity, shock or disregard," Fleming stated. "The list of issues women with biracial children face is long, and not every person deals with them to the same extent; however, some issues cross all class and regional lines."

The initiative is part of the YWCA's new Racial Justice Program.

Lets face it, the mothers of biracial children likely felt a need to be singled out long before they had their children. Many of the mothers dated their "baby's daddy" to make a statement or rebel against somebody, probably their parents. Now, lets just make a support group to make them more the centers of attention and feel so much more like the poor little victims. Life is tough, all the way through. We all have to gut it out, stay in the game, and deal with our situations. ...even if they're of our own making. These mothers should have to do what very VERY few people these days do, CONSIDER WHAT YOUR ACTIONS MAY CAUSE AND THEN DEAL WITH THEM!!! My goodness, what a joke!!!
It's funny how annonymous2 mentioned that the support group didn't have anything to do with finances. Well, I didn't refer to it being a financial support group. If there is a need for people of like circumstances to get together and talk and be there for one another, why does the YWCA have to sponsor it? I routinely get together with other people in my profession to commiserate but our get togethers aren't an organized meeting. By no means do I think that groups such as AA or NA should be done away with. They play an important part in our society. All I am saying is that to form a support group for something such as a Biracial Children, is doing nothing but singling you out further. I am happy to hear that annonmyous2 prepared her children at home before they entered school of what they may experience. More parents need to take the responsibility upon themselves and not rely on an agency to back them or do it for them.
Coordinator Nell Fleming said. "If you don’t know why or don’t think we need support, you haven’t walked in our shoes." Guess I haven't walked the mile . . . but then, I could never see the Emperor's new clothes, either. Where's MY support group? I am part of a minority of women that feel left out of programs for minority women!
