CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- What Verizon thought would be a good business move to help them focus on the future of their company isn't settling well with many of their workers.
Verizon has proposed a plan to sell their telephone land lines to Frontier.
Sunday, hundreds of workers and union members gathered at the West Virginia Culture Center to speak out against the proposed merger.
The West Virginia Public Service Commission will begin its hearings Tuesday on the plan.
Larry Cohen, President of Communications Workers of America, believes that the deal is not a good plan for the state.
"For West Virginia to be part of the global economy you need genuine high speed Internet up and down the stream across this state," said Cohen. "Unfortunately, that's not happening now and we don't think that with the debt Frontier ends up with that the finances are there for that to happen in the future."
Infrastructure and jobs are the big issues CWA members are concerned with. Jim Radcliff has worked with Verizon for 11 years. He's also worried about how the plan will effect customers.
"I work in the community and live in the community. I want to be able to go out to the stores with nobody yelling at me for not being able to provide service for them," Radcliff said.
Another concern for workers is how Frontier will handle 911 calls. Right now, Verizon workers in the state are familiar with and have a good relationship with most 911 centers in the state. Some workers worry that once those 911 lines are in out of state hands, problems could arise.
Verizon feels confident in its decision to let Frontier focus on providing service in more rural areas. Harry Mitchell, Media Relations Director, says Frontier is even offering workers a fair deal.
"They are committing to honor the labor agreements that are in place for Verizon workers who are moving that will run through August 2011. They've also committed to not reducing any technician to installer jobs until 18 months after the deal closes," said Mitchell.
The battle continues over what will change if Frontier takes over, but Mitchell says, "You'll be making your payment to Frontier versus Verizon. The same employees who are today installing your service, repairing your service will be doing so with Frontier."

Well I have had enough! I have no contract with Verizon and when I was locked out of my Email and can not recive email I called customer service they can't do a thing and they don't care dump the customers that is what they are doing. well guess what? I dumped them and have apointment for a new set of services from another company! so there verizon eat dirt! I read online the only thing my account will do after tomorrow who knows they "trueswiched" my Yahoo address for some reason(stole my email) so no more email from yahoo eaither verizon is trying to force me to stay so that frontier can charge me 50 bucks for poor service. Just shop for another provider why put up with the stress? you don't have to stay and merge even if you have a contract it is broken because it was with verizon not frontier so you have no contract once they sell you are free! Verizon is a down hill lieing company milks their customers and cheats them. Just say no and fire them I am glad I did. good riddence.
Let those who bash the CWA not forget that Frontier is also CWA union.
The Union does not make Verizon's business decisions. Remain focused on the issue. It's WV, service and the ecomony. The sale is bad for WV. It puts an already strapped company (Frontier)into a deeper hole. Verizon should be held accountable by the PSC to improve service and their facilities. They can continue to grow and move into other ventures. They don't have to abandon the customers that have provided their profits to enable them to grow.
