Tropical Downpours to End the Heat Wave
With a crash of thunder, a rush of wind and a torrent of rain, our latest heat wave is coming to a sopping ending. Late this Tuesday afternoon, showers and thunderstorms have blossomed in the heat rich and humidity laden Appalachian atmosphere. These are the first of several rounds of showers to cross the areas this week.
While generally non-severe, this evening’s action will be capable of nuisance street flooding where an inch of rain falls in a half hour’s time and localized power hits from lightning strikes. Action should settle down by midnight.
Then on Wednesday, a few strong downpours will accompany the passage of a cold front. In time, this front will chase away the heat and humidity while also scouring the air of the ugly yellow haze. By Thursday and Friday, a cleaner sky and cooler air mass will invade. Still, the new chill in the heavens will help to conjure up a few late week showers. Given how cold it will be in the heavens, I suspect a few hail reports can occur then as Mother Nature has her ice cube machine working.
But for tonight, some healthy garden variety downpours will wash away some little league games while giving lawns and landscapes a much needed drink of ‘free’ water.
