Boone County's Trish Bragg is asking for help to keep her no-kill animal shelter open -- a shelter that started out with good intentions but has become overwhelming for Bragg.

You can bet this lady is having a hard time in W. VA. There are so few laws & so many hard headed people about spaying/neutering, etc. I have 10 rescues & they keep me VERY busy all the time--feeding, cleaning cages, meds for the old ones, sweeping, moping, changing water buckets (bleaching), etc. etc. etc. Anyone who even attempts a rescue is a hard working person. It can get over their heads quickly. KB in GA

Patricia is my grandma and i know for a fact that my uncle and her clean that pen everyday. I have went down and helped and you try keeping all those dogs clean when you also have 3 twelve year olds at home to take care of. I know that every dime that is donated goes on these dogs and my family has adopted some ourselves. Please help and physical help would be greatly welcomed.

This place is a disgusting pigsty and needs to be shut down. Do you people not see the dog poop and trash all over the place? It didn't get that way overnight - it must have taken many many months, maybe years, to get that disgusting. This place should be burned down after those poor animals are removed.

WOW it saddens my heart to see this women doing everything in her power to save these poor animals, I applaud you. One person wrote about do you let non perfect people adopt? Its crazy its the non perfect people who are not fit to adopt these precious animals thats why there are so many unwanted animals out there. Animals are not a dime a dozen it takes specials people who will love and take care of them, and any percautions should be taken and referrals to make sure these anomals are in a safe home. Please give me an adress so I can send some money Im from up state n.y. and will be soon working with a animal group in washington county Keep up the good work dont let the negativity get you down may God continue His blessing on you and your animal shelter

@Shelter operator: Find out how to add your organization to the petfinder.com site. This will get national attention for your babies, who can find homes in a broader area. You can [probably] also find information there on obtaining additional funding for your group. I wish you the greatest of success.

I cannot imagine the battle this woman faces- esp. in West Virginia. Rescue is so hard, and rescuers put up with all sorts of crazy situations. We are selective where the animals go. I have seen people turn in their pet because they "couldn't afford" then drive away in a Lexus with fake nails, someone dump their cat because it didn't match their new furniture, an adopter who beat the dog over the head with a shovel, another who kept the dog in mud and feces after she promised to keep inside, someone let their dog's leg rot off, so YES we can be strict on who adopts. SPAY/NEUTER is the most simple and basic concept West Virginians need to tackle. Dogs get loose on accident, and it only takes once to create a litter of 14 puppies. It is your responsibility.

This is a prime example of what one animal rights activist is attempting to accomplish in a state with a reputation for irresponsibility, in regards to animals (horses, dogs, cats). SPAY/NEUTER/GELD and if you cannot do this - find a GOOD home for your pets, but DO NOT DUMP. Look to your representative in Charleston. Have someone write a proposal for a grant. The responsible/trustworthy in this state must take up the slack for "the wrong kind" and we are surrounded by this breed of human. May God help us to help the animals. Jackson County citizens have formed a new group to SAVE THE ANIMALS. It is a task for many and not just one person.

Have you tried the New York city based foundation that gives grants to grassroot organizations? Their names are Jim Mason of the Two Mauds Foundation and Patty Finch of PetsMart Charities. Maybe you could try a professional and experienced grant writer. Just some thoughts... Goodluck, wish I lived closer.

Does this shelter actually let non-perfect people adopt their animals or are they like the rescue shelters who won't let anyone adopt their animals and then constantly beg for money to keep them open. Be careful when giving places like this money. The rescue centers will find any excuse possible to not let people adopt their pets and then beg for your money to feed all the animals that they don't have room for.

The adoption fee is normally $50 for dogs from this shelter, and that helps cover the costs of spaying/neutering and shots. It does say $100 on one part of the website, but I think that doesn't normally apply (from my experience there).

I suggest lowering the adoption fee and you would be able to place more pets. I understand the cost and appreciate all that you are doing but $100 is even more that the Kanawha Humane Society charges and their fees cover spaying and neutering. I checked your website and was surprised at the $100 fee.

I'm several counties away so physically helping is not an option. I could send a small donation except this story didn't include a mailing address or to whom the check should be made out to. An update to this story with this information would be appreciated.

http://www.4shareinc.com/ Here's the website. Contact info is on there, as well as a mailing address for donations and a paypal link. I just donated $50 and I hope it's set up as a charity account so there's no fees taken out. Keep spreading the story around; I've seen it mentioned on forums by people as far out as CT already!

I suggest starting a web site, uploading pictures of the animals with a short story and accepting donations to help keep your efforts going strong. I'd look for a volunteer who could design a site for you or possibly hiring someone -- usually web designers from overseas (India -- in particular) are the cheapest to hire. Most do excellent work. I'm a beginning web developer myself but I only know some PHP / MySQL. I wouldn't know how to do the graphic designing portion of the site. I recommend a more experienced developer. I wish you the best of luck! Feel free to contact me if I can be of any help.
