Secretary of State Betty Ireland will not seek re-election or run for any other office in 2008. Ireland announced her plans this morning.
She says she needs to spend more time taking care of her parents. However, Ireland says she will stay active in promoting women in public service. Ireland says "although my personal obligations will not allow me to execute a political campaign for 2008, don't count me out in the future."
She considered a state senate run so she could stay in close proximity to her parents, but she says she decided even that move would not be fair to either her constituents or her family.
