CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Presidents Day allowed some West Virginia state employees to rally at the Capitol on their day off for better working conditions.
Members of the Public Workers Union are pressing lawmakers and Gov. Joe Manchin to recognize seniority rights, provide a cost-of-living increase and halt involuntary transfers.
The group also opposes looming premium hikes to their health coverage. The finance board of the Public Employees Insurance Agency approved those cost increases following a series of hearings around the state. The workers union wants to require that a minimum number of board members attend future public hearings.
A dozen or so group members attended Monday's rally. They also presented a petition to Manchin signed by nearly 2,000 supporters.

This is to Mike:I am a state worker who has worked for the state of WV for 17 years and barely makes $25,000 a year. We don't make nothing compared to the private sector. We pay about $187 a month for our health insurance...I wished i made $60 to 70,000 dollars a year, I would be glad to pay $300 a month for insurance. If it wasn't for two jobs i couldn't even pay the bills..so quit you complaining and get out and work for a living and pay taxes like us..If i can work two jobs...many of these cry babies that say they can;t find work ought to be able to find at least one...
Stop crying god forbid if you were to have a death in your family would you pray for a death in families of others because of your own situation? I would hope not. Just because people have lost jobs in a bad bad sitation does not mean people should work in a hostile underpaid job.
To Stop Crying: Don't you realize we are all in this together? This union is represented by the rank and file, and speaks for all workers who are being exploited. State workers have no protection under OSHA so must work in toxic dumps- Legionnaires Disease, unstable roofs, etc. Al Summers the great philanthropist leased fire hazards to the state workers comp for years. Many have two jobs just to pay the bills. State workers traded wages for healthcare and now health care is being attacked. Now Manchin has paid the Hay Group to work on privatizing state jobs. Privatization does not save money-ask any Brickstreet client. These issues affect all workers. Until you see this you will always lose.
