Severe Thunderstorms Hopscotch Region
This Dog Day of summer went to work on an old frontal boundary resulting in a broken line of brief but intense thunderstorms this afternoon. What started as an impressive cluster of storms last night and this morning in Illinois and Indiana faded as it crossed Western Ohio this morning.
Had you looked just at the radar trends this morning, a forecast of severe weather would have looked like a long shot. But the remnant winds from this old storm complex migrated into our region this afternoon and interacted with the high heat and tropical humidity of still another 90 degree day to spawn a line of new storms. These storms turned severe as they crossed Lawrence Ohio, Cabell, Mason and Putnam WV before 5:30. Winds gusted to 50 miles per hour in spots with nickel sized hail falling in spots.
For the rest of the evening, showers and storms will be scattered around with rainbow reports sure to come pouring in as evening sunshine follows the storms.
