A mechanic is dead after he was struck by a flying rock while working on an eastern Kentucky surface coal mine.
Kentucky Office of Mine Safety and Licensing spokeswoman Holly
McCoy says 40-year-old Bobby Messer of David, Kentucky, was
working as a mechanic for CAM Mining Mine Number One at Ashcamp in Pike County.
McCoy said explosives detonated late Monday afternoon and sent rock flying through the air. Messer ran for cover but was struck in the back of his head with a rock.
McCoy said mine inspectors are investigating the death, the second at a Kentucky coal mine this year.
