LOUISA, Ky. (WSAZ) -- He pleaded guilty to murder, assault and robbery and is now going to prison.

Jimmy Levering, 28, of Louisa, Ky., was sentenced Friday to 30 years in prison.

Levering shot and killed Sherry Smith in March 2010 at her home in Fallsburg, Ky. Smith was 48-years-old. Levering also shot Smith's boyfriend, 44-year-old Ronald Young.

Investigators said at the time of the shooting, Levering and his wife, Wilma Levering were staying with Smith and Young at their home on Fuller's Ridge in Fallsburg.

After shooting Smith and Young, Levering and his wife took off in their vehicle and just a few miles away, Levering also shot his wife. She was able to get to a local grocery store and called 911.

Young and Wilma Levering survived the shooting.

Levering originally faced the death penalty, but made a plea deal for the 30 years.

He will be eligible for parole in 20 years.

The Commonwealth Attorney tells WSAZ.com that Jimmy Levering pleaded guilty to murder and assault charges during a hearing in late April

As part of the pleas deal, Levering will be sentenced to 30 years later this month.

Levering is charged with the shooting death of Sherry Smith, and the wounding of Ronald Young and Levering’s wife, Wilma.

The shootings happened in March of 2010.

They say the hearing is set for 11 a.m. on March 24.

But, after several hours, that search ended in a peaceful arrest.

Jimmy Levering is accused of shooting three people -- a man and two women, one who later died at the hospital. Police say the shooter and all three victims are related, but they haven't released details on how. One thing was certain -- as long as Levering was on the run, very few people were at rest.

The constant thumping of a chopper over Fallsburg, Ky., was a nerve-wracking reminder that something was terribly wrong.

"I'm afraid that he’s going to come in my back door," said Ramona Preston, a frightened neighbor.

Preston was referring to Levering. According to police, he started his shooting spree shortly after midnight at this home on Fullers Ridge where he allegedly shot a man and a woman. The man, bloodied by several gunshots, was able to make his way across the street to a neighbor’s house to get help. Both were taken to the hospital where the woman later died.

Police then say the second shooting happened several miles away just down the road from the local grocery store.

That victim, Wilma Levering, is Jimmy’s wife. She was able to get away and call for help. Meanwhile, Levering took off -- becoming a fugitive considered armed and dangerous.

For that reason, it didn't take long before Kentucky State Police brought in their Special Response Team, including an armored vehicle. A dozen tactical troopers specializing in high-risk searches and fugitive apprehensions quickly mobilized. Armed with assault rifles, they headed off into the nearby woods, aided by overhead surveillance.

We know the victims are Ronald Young, who's 44, and Sherry Smith, who was 48. They were boyfriend and girlfriend and lived at the first residence on Fullers Ridge. Sherry is the one who died at the hospital. The third victim, Wilma Levering, Jimmy's wife, is 29. She’s recovering at a local hospital.

Jimmy faces several charges including murder. He's being taken to the Big Sandy Regional Jail.

Troopers say Levering shot Smith and her boyfriend Ronald Young, 44, at the couple's home on Fuller Ridge in Fallsburg. They tell WSAZ.com that Jimmy Levering and his wife, Wilma, left in the couple's car. The Levering's had been staying with Young and Smith, according to police.

Investigators say Jimmy Levering then shot his wife while the two were traveling near the junction of Kentucky Route 3398 and Delong Branch. They say Wilma Levering managed to get out of the car and called 911 at the Fallsburg Grocery.

In addition to the murder charge, Jimmy Levering faces two counts of Assault in the First Degree, Theft by Unlawful Taking (Auto) and Possession of a Handgun by a Convicted Felon. He has been taken to the Big Sandy Regional Jail in Johnson County.

Jimmy Levering was taken into custody by a Kentucky State Police Special Response Team at 2:20 Monday. Police say Levering was hiding in the woods near Delong Branch in the Fallsburg Area. He surrendered peacefully to troopers after a short negotiation. Levering's vehicle was also located in the woods near where he was apprehended.

Detectives are still processing the scene where Levering was captured and are continuing their investigation into a possible motive for the shootings.

WSAZ.com has confirmed that one of the victims has died. No word on the conditions of the other two victims. Police have not released their names.

Nearly a dozen officials with an armored truck are heading into the woods to look for shooting the suspect, Jimmy Levering.

The team specializes in high risk searches and fugitive apprehension.

The team came from Winchester, Kentucky.

A crew is also in a helicopter searching from the air.

They tell WSAZ.com that he may be hiding in the woods.

He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a red-checkered flannel shirt.

State Police say Levering should still be considered armed and dangerous.

Kentucky State Police are investigating two separate shootings that occurred just after midnight Monday morning on Fullers Ridge near Fallsburg Grocery Store.

Police say two women and a man were shot, but their identities haven't been released.

Investigators also tell WSAZ.com they're looking for Jimmy Levering. He was last seen around 4:00 Monday morning in a 2002 red Jeep Wrangler with possible front end damage.

Levering is from nearby Louisa and is 28-years-old.

State Police say Levering should be considered armed and dangerous.

All of the victims were transported to local hospitals. There is no update on their conditions.

Troopers are asking anyone with information on the location of Jimmy Levering to call them.
