UPDATE: Trial Postponed for Man Accused of Stealing Off-Duty Officer's Gun

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The case against a man accused of knocking out a police officer and stealing his gun has hit a snag.

Travis Lattea was supposed to go on trial today in Charleston, but it was postponed.

The Scott Depot man is accused of knocking an off duty police officer unconscious by striking him in the head from behind. Police say Lattea then took the officer's personal firearm while he was unconscious and left the scene.

It happened in March 2010 at Quaker Steak and Lube on Mountaineer Boulevard in Charleston.

Charleston Detectives tell WSAZ.com Lattea knew the victim was a police officer.

Lattea is charged with robbery and battery on a police officer.

His new trial is scheduled for March.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A man from Scott Depot is behind bars charged with first degree robbery after he struck an off duty police officer in the head and took his gun.

The alleged crime happened at 11:46 p.m. Tuesday at Quaker Steak and Lube at 2931 Mountaineer Boulevard in Charleston.

According to the criminal complaint, Travis Lattea, 29, of Scott Depot, knocked an off duty police officer unconscious by striking him in the head from behind. Police say Lattea then took the officer's personal firearm while he was unconscious and left the scene.

Charleston Detectives tell WSAZ.com Lattea knew the victim was a police officer. We're also told people at the restaurant knew Lattea and what vehicle he was driving.

Lattea was caught soon after the incident by a Putnam County Sheriff's Deputy near the Kanawha-Putnam County line.

The off duty officer works for the city of South Charleston, according to the complaint. The officer's unidentified in the criminal complaint as M.H.

As of Wednesday morning, Lattea is still in the South Central Regional Jail charged with first degree robbery and battery on a police officer.
