UPDATE 7/4/13 @ 8 p.m.
ELLIOTT COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- In Elliott County it may take emergency crews a little longer to reach residents in a emergency due to the theft and vandalism of 911 address signs across the county.
The Elliott County Sheriff's Office tells WSAZ that more than 150 signs have been stolen the past couple of years.
The signs were put in place to help emergency crews easily and quickly find addresses.
A Sheriff's Office spokesperson said once new signs are printed and put back up, someone immediately takes them down again.
Alan Fay is a paramedic for Elliott County EMS.
“We have a problem of not being able to find roads when we need to,” Fay said. “The other day we went out on what sounded like a pretty critical run. We couldn't find the road."
He says worst case scenario, the extra time this problem costs them could end up costing a life.
"Our dispatchers have been doing a really good job giving us directions, but it would be a whole lot easier with the response time if we just had our road signs up," Fay said.
Debbie Wagoner and her family are selling 4th of July fireworks to make a little extra cash on the side.
She hopes whoever's doing this won't be celebrating their freedom much longer, and she wants the culprits to know they could end up paying for it in more ways than one.
"It could be their family they (EMS crews) end up looking for,” Wagoner said. “It could be them.”
Mattie Flannery says signs on his road have been stolen twice.
"You've got people who go around and tear them down just for the fun of it," Flannery said.
The spokesperson with the sheriff’s department believes most of the thefts are because residents don't want their street addresses posted.
As a result of the recent thefts, the Sheriff's Office is offering a $250.00 reward for any information that could lead to arrest and conviction of those involved.
