HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Voters in Cabell County have approved six "excess" levies in the May 2010 Primary. The levies bring millions of dollars to help fund several services across the county, including fire, ambulance and public health services.

The most talked about levy from Tuesday's election was for the Cabell-Huntington Health Department. The levy needed a "super" majority, or 60% of the "For" votes. The levy narrowly passed with 61.6% of voters approving the levy.

Cabell-Huntington Health Department Director Dr. Harry Tweel was closely watching the returns at the Cabell County Courthouse Tuesday night. He says he's not surprised by the large number of voters who tried to derail the levy. Many were citizens and business owners who were still upset about over the health department expanding the county's smoking ban to bars and video lottery parlors.

"The voters have spoken," Dr. Tweel said. "I'm sorry it became a one issue vote. We'll try to continue to improve the health of all of the people of the county, and do what we need to do to help ease the burden."

Voters also approved five other levies. They include levies for: Cabell Co. Emergency Medical Services, Green Acres Regional Center/Autism Services, Cabell Co. Senior Citizens Projects and Programs, Tri-State Transit Authority (both County and City levies passed), and Fire Protection Services.

In all, the levies help bring in more than $30 million dollars over the next five years.

I say do a recount on the health dept levy. We do not need it, it will do more harm than good. and I hope the Idiots that voted for it soon realize it.

Wow - funny how they "just made the supermajority" vote by two percent! I don't believe any voting results are fair and honest these days. Why should I?
