The federal government has released the results to an investigation into why gas prices were so up and down in the spring and summer last year.

The Federal Trade Commission says the effects of summer driving, an increase of the price of crude oil and an increase in the price of ethanol were the biggest reasons for the jumps.

Other factors include capacity reduction at refineries, refinery outages due to hurricane damage and increased gas demand beyond the summer travel season.
