GLASGOW, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A local volunteer fire department is getting some much needed help after AEP donates land.
The Glasgow Volunteer Fire Department's station was built more than 40 years ago. Now, it's practically in shambles. "It was deemed that it has structural issues," Fire Chief Marty Blankenship said.
Currently, the department has been forced to move their trucks to another location. They can't even house them in the current station.
"For the last three years, we've been looking for a new place to call home and luckily through the support of Appalachian Power, they gave that property to us," Blankenship said.
Kanawha River American Electric Power is donating eight acres of unused property for the fire department to build a brand new station -- four times the size of the old one.
"Giving them the land adjacent to our plant is more cost beneficial to the town of Glasgow," Plant Manager Aaron Sink said.
The fire department says the location is perfect. It's already equipped with a helicopter pad and it's right off of Route 60, where the department responds to over 300 calls a year.
"The majority of our calls are not in this community. It's generally out on the highway and by putting the new station on the highway, it will increase our response times," Blankenship said.
AEP and the fire department signed off on the land Monday, but getting it is only the first step. Grants and taxes from levee's will help fund the nearly $6 million dollar station.
"The next step will be to build a state-of-the-art volunteer fire department and ambulance station. This is the kind of gift that will have an effect for many, many years to come," Kanawha County Commissioner Dave Hardy said.
The fire department is also hoping to use the station to house the police department and as a community rec center.
