Angel in the End Zone for Super Bowl XLVII

Updated: Fri 10:26 PM, Feb 01, 2013

MILTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- No matter where he was or what he was doing, Roddy Richardson’s allegiances were always clear.

“I never saw him out a 49ers hat or a shirt or a Marshall,” explained his wife Dee Richardson.

One time he took the San Fransisco hat off his head and handed it to a fellow fan that didn’t have one.

Roddy went to Marshall. His youngest son is a student there now.

“From the moment he found out that I was pregnant it was, ‘If we have a boy, his name will be Montana.’ ”

The year Joe Montana's namesake was born, 1994, the 49ers won a Super Bowl.

The same was true in 1981 when his son Eric came into the world and in 1989, the year Dee and Roddy tied the knot.

“When we met in 1985, one of the first questions he asked me was, ‘Do you like the 49ers?’ ”

The excitement Roddy had for his team changed March 13, 2012 -- the day Marshall's Randy Moss officially joined the team.

Dee remembers he said, “I can tell you right now we are going to the Super Bowl baby, we are going to the Super Bowl!”

“I said ‘Honey, they haven't been in the Super Bowl in 18 years, not since Montana was born.' He said, ‘I can feel it!’ ”

Just as Roddy's two favorite worlds collided, Dee's world came crashing down.

“Little did I know, those were going to be his last words to me.”

Dee left for work. Roddy died shortly after from a heart attack.

Dee hasn’t watched much football this season.

“I just couldn't watch them. Then last week I was flipping through the channels and I saw that the 49ers were in the NFC championship game and I realized if they win this they are Super Bowl bound.”

Dee says her angel in the end zone is teaching her a lesson.

“Even in our doubt and even in our grief there is a lesson to be learned. And my lesson is never give up hope. Never give up faith. What seems impossible is possible.”

On Sunday, just before kickoff,Dee will release green and white, and red and gold balloons -- the colors of Roddy’s teams -- in honor of her husband.
