UPDATE 10/15/13 @ 5:15 p.m.
SOUTH WEBSTER, Ohio (WSAZ) -- When it comes to Giovanni's Pizza in South Webster, all the buzz is usually about the pizza. But Monday, the Scioto County Sheriff's Department says the restaurant became the center of an armed robbery investigation.
"You never really know what to expect," Giovanni's General Manager Jeffrey Mullins said. "This has never happened to me, it's never happened to my employees. You just don't know how to react."
Mullins says sometime after 4 p.m. Monday, a man dressed in a large coat, ski mask and gloves came into the business looking for some quick cash.
"We were all back in the kitchen, working on cleaning up and getting stuff ready for dinner," Mullins said. "Next thing you know, someone hollers, 'someone just came in and stole the register'."
Mullins called police and gave them a description of the suspect and the getaway car, but he also noticed the robber dropped some type of weapon while trying to get away.
"it fell out in the parking lot right after he went out," Mullins said.
Scioto County Sheriff's Deputies say the gun was actually an airsoft pistol. Investigators began working to track down the suspect. Investigators say it appears the suspect used a t-shirt to cover the
tags on his car.
A short time later, deputies spotted the car driving down SR 140. They arrested the driver, Jonathan Bellar, 19, charging him with armed robbery and breaking and entering.
During the investigation, detectives learned Bellar had also broken into the Country Store just down the road. According to store employees, nothing was stolen thanks to the security alarm going off.
Tuesday afternoon, deputies returned Giovanni's stolen cash register that had been tossed into a nearby creek during the getaway, along with the clothing and masked used in the robbery.
As for Mullins, this situation has given him new persepctive on how far criminals are willing to go to steal some cash.
"Be leery," Mullins said. "Always keep your guard up. You never know what's going to come in. These are hard times for everyone."
