ELKVIEW, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A man's life was taken after his home caught fire Monday afternoon, leaving neighbors in mourning.

The fire started about 4:30 p.m. Monday at a house along Jakes Run Road in Elkview.

Neighbors tell WSAZ.com Richard Garland, 60, of Elkview, lived in the home and wasn't able to make it out safely.

"Richard was just truly a good person," neighbor Shirley Stump said. "If you needed anything, all you had to do was just call him."

The State Fire Marshal's Office say Garland's body was found near the front door of the home.

"That was, devastating," Stump said. "So I mean, I couldn't get it off my mind."

Garland served in the Army and was retired from the West Virginia Department of Transportation.

No smoke detectors were found in the home, but the fire marshal says they could have burned in the fire.

The cause is still questionable, but investigators don't believe it's suspicious.

"The fire is basically just undetermined; it's still under investigation," State Fire Marshal Jason Baltic said. "As far as smoke detectors, I couldn't find any, but due to the damage there's the possibility there could be smoke detectors. We just couldn't find them because of the fire."

Investigators plan to search for more clues at the scene. They know the fire started in the front room.

Neighbors say Garland had lived there for decades.
