UPDATE 1/11/13 @ 6:40 p.m.
LOGAN COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The man wanted in connection with two Logan murders earlier this week is dead after police say he pulled out a rifle at the end of a high-speed chase.

West Virginia State Police Capt. D.M. Nelson said, "At the end of the pursuit Mr. Dempsey pulled his vehicle off and then exited the vehicle. When he did so he had a rifle and, when he got out of the vehicle, he pointed the rifle at the troopers at which time they responded to that threat."

Police had been searching for John Dempsey, 37, since Tuesday when 88-year-old Grover Morrison was found dead in his home. Morrison's family discovered the body at his his home along Stratton
Street in Logan.

On Thursday, Freddie Williams of the Taplin area also was murdered. State Police say they believe Dempsey was involved in that murder.

Authorites say Dempsey also stole a woman's car on Thursday. That's when he led police on the high-speed chase.

West Virginia State Police are still investigating the two homicides and
aren't ready to release how the victims died.

UPDATE 1/11/13 @ 6:30 p.m.
LOGAN COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- For those who knew the victims, the reality of this tragedy is just setting in.

It’s a somber scene in the Man area of Logan County, especially in the Taplin community where Freddie Williams, the second victim, was killed Thursday night.

After the first murder Tuesday night, neighbors there were already on the lookout for John Dempsey, and one man says he was ready for him.

“I stuck it (a gun) in his face. I said, 'John, you better get away from me,' " the neighbor said.

This man, who wishes not to be identified, says Dempsey came to his home Thursday night.

He knew Dempsey was accused of killing Grover Morrison, 88, just two nights earlier -- so this guy grabbed his gun.

“He got away from me quick,” he said.

Police say Dempsey then stole a neighbor's car and led them on a chase, which ultimately led to a standoff where he was shot and killed.

Meanwhile, the neighbor called his friend, Freddie Williams, to warn him that Dempsey had been in the neighborhood. However, Williams didn't answer.

“Little did I know that he had just killed the best guy in this community. He had just killed Freddie,” he said.

What’s really disturbing is that Williams already was afraid of Dempsey. He even called the WSAZ newsroom the night before, saying Dempsey had become violent toward him a few months ago.

“November, he went over and tied Freddie up, grabbed Freddie’s own gun and stuck it in Freddie’s face,” the neighbor said.

We asked police if it had ever been reported. Troopers said yes, but that Williams wouldn't release Dempsey’s name.

Now, after a violent crime spree, both men and another man are dead, and their loved ones are left to grieve.

UPDATE 1/10/13 @ 11:45 p.m.
LOGAN COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A murder suspect has been shot and killed by police, but not before going on another deadly crime spree.

West Virginia State Police say John Dempsey, 37, was gunned down in an officer-involved shooting Thursday evening near Man.

Troopers say Dempsey attempted to invade the home of an elderly man in Taplin, but that man ran Dempsey off with a gun. They say he then went to a neighbor's home and stole a woman's car.

He then led troopers on a chase before being shot and killed.

Troopers say in that same area, Freddie Williams was murdered at his home. This is believed to be connected to Dempsey's crime spree Thursday night.

Dempsey has been on the run since Tuesday night. Troopers say that is when he tied up and killed Grover Morrison, 88, at his home along Stratton Street in Logan County.

Troopers say Dempsey also stole Morrison's car. It was found abandoned late Tuesday night in a parking lot.

No word yet on a motive or cause of death in either murder.

West Virginia State Police and Logan City Police spent more than 48 hours searching for Dempsey. They are now investigating to see if he had any help with the crimes.

UPDATE 1/9/13 @ 11 p.m.
LOGAN COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- An elderly man tied up and killed, his car stolen and later turning up in a parking lot in Man, W.Va. -- now, police suspect the man behind it all might still be in the area.

"John Dempsey -- everybody up here knows John Dempsey. Don't they? Everybody knows him, you know," said Bobby York, who said he’s known Dempsey for at least 20 years.

Dempsey is suspected in the murder of 88-year-old Grover Morrison. But some people who know Dempsey suspect otherwise.

"I've never known him to get into trouble for anything," said Amy Ellison, who also knows Dempsey.

Morrison's body was found Tuesday inside his home along Stratton Street in Logan.

"I don't see John Dempsey doing that -- I'll be honest with you, I really don't see him doing that," York said. "I've never known of him fighting all the time and starting trouble and being in jail all the time."

Police, however, have a different view of Dempsey.

"He considered armed and dangerous," West Virginia State Police Trooper Silas Belt said. "He has made numerous threats -- everybody who comes in contact with him is to use caution and to be safe."

And right now, police are doing anything to catch up with their prime suspect.
