Man Charged in Connection with Institute Shooting

UPDATE 10/11/12 @ 4:20 p.m.
INSTITUTE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- One person has been charged in connection with a shooting in Institute Thursday.

According to the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department, Franklin Beverly, 31, of West Dunbar, is being charged with malicious wounding.

The shooting happened about 11:45 a.m. Thursday morning.

According to the release, Beverly shot Joe Green, of West Dunbar.

Beverly told deputies, according to the release, that he shot Green because Green had "smacked" Beverly's girlfriend in the stomach area, who he said was pregnant, about one week ago.

According to the release, Beverly walked into the Smooth Avenue apartment just before Noon and then shot Green several times.

Green was transported to CAMC General and is listed in serious condition.

Dunbar Primary, Dunbar Intermediate, Dunbar Middle, Ben Franklin Career and Techincal/Vocational Center and the Shawnee Community Daycare Center were placed on lock down because of the incident.

Beverly will be arraigned in Kanawha County Magistrate Court about 4:45 p.m.

INSTITUTE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The search continues for a shooting suspect in Institute.

Kanawha County Sheriff's Deputies say a man was shot several times at an apartment on Smoot Avenue.

It happened about 11:45 a.m. Thursday morning.

Deputies say they are interviewing a person of interest in the case, right now.

Deputies say the person of interest closely matches the description of the suspect in the case.

The man who was shot is currently in surgery. His name has not been released.

Meanwhile, deputies are waiting on a search warrant to get into the apartment where the crime happened.

Dunbar Primary, Dunbar Intermediate, Dunbar Middle, Ben Franklin Career and Techincal/Vocational Center and the Shawnee Community Daycare Center were placed on lock down because of the incident.

The lock down has been lifted and things are back to normal.

Superintendent Ron Deurring tells WSAZ.com, they put the schools on lock down as a precaution.

The shooting was reported at 11:49 a.m. along Smoot Avenue in Institute.

The shooting was reported at 11:49 a.m. along Smoot Avenue in Institute.
