MEIGS COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- The name of the man killed Friday morning in a plane crash has been released.
Gerald Chamberlain, 72, of Raeford, N.C., was pronounced dead at the scene by the Meigs County Coroner, according to a news release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Chamberlain, the pilot, was the sole occupant of the 2007 Escapade single engine fixed-wing aircraft.
While the cause of the crash appears to be based on mechanical failure, the crash remains under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The Rutland Fire Chief tells WSAZ.com there was one person on the plane and that person died in the crash.
Emergency responders believe the pilot was from North Carolina and in his 60s.
The Chief says the closest airports are in Athens and Gallia counties and neither had contact with the pilot.
Sgt. Dan Leonard with Meigs County Sheriff’s Office tells WSAZ.com that the plane was reported down near Zion Road in the area of Ohio 143 around 11:45 a.m. Friday. That's in Rutland, Ohio.
The Highway Patrol says the experimental aircraft went down in an extremely wooded area.
A witness say they heard the plane's engine sputtering before the crash. They tell WSAZ.com it was rainy and foggy at the time.
NTSB investigators arrived at the scene to try and determine what happened.

No word on injuries or how many people were on the plane.
The Ohio Highway Patrol is handling the investigation.
