UPDATE 11/2/12 @ 5:45 p.m.
FAYETTE COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A Fayette County man is recovering in the hospital after being shot by state police three times.

Now his family is speaking out, saying his shooting was unjustified.

"It was horrible, I mean, you're sitting there thinking, what am I going to do if he dies," said Michelle Stover, the suspect’s daughter.

Michelle and Patricia Stover are trying to make sense of what happened to their father, Ronald Reese. Reese was shot three times by state police as they tried to execute a search warrant as part of an ongoing drug investigation.

"They bust through his door,” Stover said. “He's standing over by the door. Evidently they saw the pistol in his hand. They did not ask him to put it down and they commenced to shooting him."

But that’s not what state police say happened. Troopers say they made it clear they were there to execute the warrant, opened the door and that’s when they saw Reese pointing a gun. They ordered him to drop it and when he didn’t, they fired.

His family said Reese didn’t know police were outside. He just heard a noise, grabbed his gun and headed toward the door.

"There's no logical explanation,” Stover said. “Like he told us, if I would have known the cops were the ones outside plundering, no I wouldn't have had a gun. Did I want to be shot? No."

"If he had a gun as they said and they shot him and he didn't shoot back he's not violent,” said Patricia Stover, suspect’s daughter. “And then they shot him another three times. There's no reason for it. None."

It's a violent crime that’s put neighbors like William Tolliver on edge. He heard gunfire ring out Thursday night.

"It could have been someone coming down the road and shooting everybody, for all I know,” Tolliver said. “I just want to make sure my family is safe."

Now an investigation is underway into a shooting that’s left this family with a lot of unanswered questions.

Reese was taken to a Charleston hospital. His condition is unknown at this time.

State police said when he’s released from the hospital, he’ll be charged with distribution of a controlled substance, wanton endangerment and brandishing.

The shooting remains under investigation.
