UPDATE 7/22/13 @ 10:30 a.m.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- An early morning fire on Charleston's west side has been ruled arson.

The fire was reported a little after 4 a.m. Monday at 833 Stockton Street.

Charleston Firefighters say a device or material that came through a small window in the back of the home appears to have caused the fire.

This house was vacant and recently boarded up by the city.

Building Commissioner Tony Harmon tells WSAZ.com the home was boarded up due to unsafe conditions. Harmon says the house was unsafe, didn't have utilities and the inside of it is a mess.

Harmon also says the city has found people living inside of it a couple of times that weren't supposed to be there.

The city hopes to have the home torn down in the near future once the paperwork is finalized with the current homeowner.

16 firefighters responded to the scene, that included three engine companies. Firefighters say with quick response and early notification from the 911 caller allowed them to limit the fire to a bathroom.
