UPDATE 4/2/13 @ 6:40 p.m.
MINK SHOALS, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A Kanawha County man is now in jail after firing as many as 15 shots from his home.

It happened about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday along Dutch Road in Mink Shoals.

Neighbor’s called the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department, complaining of shots fired and someone knocking on their doors.

When deputies arrived, they saw Aaron Shaffer, 27, walking with a shotgun in his hand. Shaffer told deputies there were prowlers in the neighborhood.

Monday night, deputies were dispatched to the same area after Shaffer called about people trying to break in. Kanawha Sheriff's Capt. Sean Crosier said they found no evidence of prowlers at the time.

“We had been here already through the evening; [Shaffer] had been fearful there were some prowlers,” Crosier said.

When deputies arrived, Shaffer’s home doors were blocked and, in light of Shaffer’s military background, they became concerned about explosives.

A team of three from the bomb squad searched the home for hours, but nothing suspicious was found.

According to the criminal complaint, Shaffer told deputies he thought people, unknown to him, were after him.

Neighbors say the shooting and subsequent police activity is unusual for Dutch Road.

“When I came home yesterday evening, the police were sitting there with their lights flashing,” Patty Casto said.

“We usually don't have no problems up here,” neighbor Jean Armstead said.

Shaffer was charged with wanton endangerment. He was taken to the South Central Regional Jail.
