NITRO, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Investigators are trying to get to the bottom of a tragic accident that took a young woman's life and sent a man to the hospital.

There are still some unanswered questions, and the man in the hospital may be able to help. The main question is why they were in the road when a car hit them.

The accident happened just before 11:00 p.m. Wednesday on Cross Lanes Drive in Nitro.

Henry Stuck Jr., 40, and Sara Lowery, 22, were both hit by a car.

Stuck was taken to the hospital, but Lowery was pronounced dead on the scene.

Deputies say the driver did nothing wrong.

It’s the moments leading up to the accident that caught neighbors' attention.

"Somebody was arguing. I didn't think nothing of it, and all of the sudden I heard a bam,” Robin Walker, a neighbor, said.

It's still unclear if the argument was between Stuck and Lowery, or if there was somebody else involved.

Stuck's wife tells WSAZ.com that her husband was trying to save Lowery when they were both hit.

Stuck remains in the hospital in satisfactory condition.
