UPDATE 12/3/12 @ 10:20 p.m.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- It's a holiday season filled with heartbreak and uncertainty for a group of people on Charleston's West Side who can no longer spend it at home.

After flames destroyed their apartment building along Beuhring Avenue, many fear they could be homeless for the holidays. Firefighters say the blaze didn't appear to be an accident, stirring strong emotions from everyone involved.

"Because of one person, this whole place burned down," victim Samuel Ballangee said. "We're all out of apartments ... wouldn't you be?"

"We have nowhere else to go," said another victim, who didn't wish to be identified. "The Salvation Army is trying to help us, but after a few days we have to find somewhere else to live."

Victims say they're being put up at the Super 8 Motel in Dunbar for three days. After that, they're not sure what will happen.

Still, they're grateful that everyone in the building made it out OK, and that they're still able to share Christmas with the ones they love.

"They say on Christmas it's better to give than receive, and I'm just thankful I'm alive," one victim said.
