UPDATE 12/15/2011 @ 5:25 P.M.
KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) --The Department of Environmental Protection tells WSAZ.com that what they originally thought was an explosion was not.
The Department is blaming the accident on pressure built up in a tank causing a valve to blow off.
One worker was injured due to the accident.
No update yet on the workers conditions.
It happened about 3:15 p.m. at the Samples Creek Mine near Cabin Creek Road.
One man was injured by flying shrapnel. The company says he suffered a severe hand injury, but is expected to be okay.
Cabot Gas says there was no evidence of a fire during the explosion. The gas well was quickly shut off.
This happened about 3:15 p.m. Thursday at the Samples Creek Mine.
Dispatchers say they believe the explosion happened at a gas well on the mine's site.
It did not happen inside the mine.
Dispatchers say one person was taken to the hospital. There is no word on how badly the person was hurt.
A security guard at the mine tells WSAZ.com the mine is owned by Patriot Coal.
