UPDATE 8/1/11 @ 8:15 p.m.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A viewer sent WSAZ.com video after the Flying Scooter ride at Camden Park malfunctioned during the weekend -- the second such case in about a week.
The previous weekend the Spider broke down, causing two minor injuries
Parks Becker inspects rides at Camden Park.
"Some rides are so old," Parks said. "We don't have a manual, so we've written our own checklist over the years. Anything we find or fix on the ride we put in the comments at the bottom so we have records of what we had to do during the season."
And those inspections are available to the State of West Virginia's Division of Labor's Jennifer Burgess. She oversees amusement ride safety, whether it's a traveling carnival or a place like Camden Park.
"They are inspected prior to first use," Burgess said. "The Division of Labor, according to statute, has the right to inspect at any time we feel it's necessary to provide oversight. Insurance inspectors also make routine visits."
Jack Boylin with Camden Park says they do the best they can with daily inspections.
"We want our guests to have as perfect a visit as possible," Boylin said. "Fortunately, no one was hurt in this incident, but all malfunctions can't be avoided. We do our best to maintain ride safety."
Jack Boylin says the Flying Scooter needs refurbished or a new motor before re-opening. The Spider will stay closed until results from the inspection are released.
UPDATE 7/26/11 @ 10:28 a.m.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- State inspectors say it was a sweep on the Spider ride at Camden Park that broke Saturday sending several people to the hospital
Jennifer Burgess with the W.Va. Division of Labor says the sweep broke at the pivoting point and hit the ground. The operator stopped the ride, and park employees evacuated the seven people who were on the ride. She says no one was on the section that broke.
Burgess says the ride will remain out of service for the duration of the investigation.
The Department of Labor says the Spider ride was inspected on May 4 along with the other rides in the park.
Burgess says annual inspections are performed by approved third party inspectors with certified Department of Labor (DOL) inspectors providing oversight.
A certified DOL inspector is currently conducting the investigation.
UPDATE 7/24/11 @ 6 p.m.
WAYNE COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Camden Park opened up on schedule Sunday after closing half an hour early after Saturday night’s mishap.
All the rides were up and running except the Spider, which was covered by blue tarps.
The ride malfunctioned at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday, sending a leg and a car crashing to the ground.
Two kids were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Park managers say officials with the West Virginia Division of Labor were at the park Sunday morning and inspected the ride and said they hope to determine in the next couple days exactly what went wrong.
"Where the problem occurred, it was a situation where it probably couldn't have been seen," Shawn Wellman, the park's ride supervisor, said. "I think it was just more of a fluke thing than anything."
Wellman says maintenance people inspect each ride every morning, and they're checked twice a year by the state.
He also says the attractions at the 107-year-old park were inspected by the park's insurance company this past Wednesday. They deemed the Spider to be safe.
UPDATE 7/23/11 @ 11:30 p.m.
WAYNE COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A ride malfunctioned at Camden Park just before close Saturday night, sending three people to the hospital.
A mishap with the Spider at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday night sent a car of the ride scraping against the ground and then brought it to a screeching halt.
One person was injured in the accident, and two others were taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons.
The Ceredo Volunteer Fire Department had to help all the passengers get off the ride.
Park officials tell WSAZ.com it's too early to determine the cause of the accident.
"The ride started moving, I heard a scraping noise, and then just a second after that I heard a big bang and the arm hit the ground," Shawn Wellman, the park's ride supervisor, said. "I came running and the supervisor stopped the ride as quickly as he could. Parents and everybody started kind of freaking out."
The park closed 30 minutes early because of the incident.
