Route 60 in Cannonsburg Back Open Following Spill

BOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Crews have nearly finished cleaning up a chemical spill that closed a portion of U.S. 60 West near Cannonsburg, Ky.

About 4 a.m. Monday, a truck hauling Urea-based fertilizer began spilling its load onto portions of U.S. 60 West, U.S 23 and I-64 in the Boyd County area.

Boyd County 911 dispatchers tell WSAZ.com that crews are working to cleanup some isolated spills along U.S. 23 and that U.S. 60 West is back open

They say the truck was headed for an American Electric Power facility along U.S. 23 in Lawrence County. It was eventually stopped in Lawrence County.

BOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Drivers are being urged to avoid U.S. 60 West near Cannonsburg, Kentucky.

911 dispatchers tell WSAZ.com that the highway is shut down from State Route 5 to the Super Quik in Boyd County.

About 4 a.m. Monday, a truck hauling Urea-based fertilizer began spilling its load onto the highway.

Drivers called 911, reporting a slick, powdery substance on the road.

911 dispatchers also say Urea spilled onto portions of I-64 eastbound between U.S. 60 and U.S. 23, and on U.S. 23 south of the
Catlettsburg exit. Both I-64 and U.S. 23 are open, but there may be isolated lane closures.

Dispatchers tell WSAZ.com the truck was headed for an American Electric Power facility along U.S. 23 in Lawrence County. It was eventually stopped in Lawrence County.

Drivers are also being asked to avoid the area of U.S. 60 near the Paul Coffey Industrial Park.

Firefighters are now waiting on cleanup crews to arrive on the scene.

We're told there are four separate areas that need to be cleaned up.

BOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Emergency dispatchers tell WSAZ.com the truck that has been spilling a "slick, powdery substance" along U.S. 60, Interstate 64 and U.S. 23 in Boyd County has been found in Lawrence County, Kentucky.

The spill was noticed at 4 a.m. Monday in the Cannonsburg area by motorists who called 911.

Emergency crews on the scene say the truck, which was hauling urea, was traveling on Route 60 West in Cannonsburg then turned onto I-64 East. It turned off of the interstate and traveled south on U.S. 23.

A Boyd County dispatcher said the truck was stopped on U.S. 23 in Lawrence County and that its destination was an A.E.P. facility on U.S. 23 in Lawrence County.

Urea is non-toxic but it does cause the roadway to be slick.

Route 60 West is shut down at this time from the Super Quik to State Route 5.

BOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- Boyd County 911 dispatch tells WSAZ.com a truck is spilling a "slick, powdery substance" along U. S. Route 23 Southbound near Catlettsburg, Ky.

Cabell County, W.Va. dispatch tells WSAZ.com it has been told it is possibly a tractor-trailor and originated near Cannonsburg. Cabell County 911 also says Boyd County emergency dispatch has issued a precautionary warning because of the slick road.
