SPENCER, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A man burned in a house fire that killed his wife is now in fair condition at a Huntington hospital.
It happened along Circle Avenue in Spencer around 11 a.m. Thursday.
Spencer Police tell WSAZ.com Sara McAtee was unable to get out of the home.
Her husband, Mike, and a son were able to escape the fire. Two other children were not home when the fire started.
Emergency responders say flames were shooting from the second floor of the house when the got on the scene. It is believed the fire started on the second floor, where Mrs. McAtee’s body was found.
Mr. McAtee was flown to Cabell Huntington Hospital following the fire.
The fire has been ruled accidental, still no word on an official cause.
It happened along Circle Avenue around 11 a.m. Thursday.
"We're a pretty small community. Everybody knows everybody," Spencer Fire Chief Rob Miller said.
Spencer Police tell WSAZ.com Sara McAtee was unable to get out of the home.
“The fire did start in the second floor. There are two bedrooms up that area. That's where we found the body at," Miller said.
Larry Dix lived along Circle Ave. for years and knew Sara.
"Well she's leaving three kids behind. That's sad. There ain't none of them over 15 years old," Dix said. "When you'd meet her on the street she always had something nice to say to you. She always had a smile on her face,”
Now, Sara's husband is also fighting for his life.
"Mike McAtee, he came out and had facial burns, his arms were burnt. He was saying his wife was in there. He tried to go back in there. That's when the neighbors stopped him. Flames were already showing outside the house," Sergeant John Caldwell with the Spencer Police said.
Now, investigators are working to find out how it all began.
"There's other stories we're hearing, the kid threw some paper, or dropped some paper in the furnace. We've got the fire marshal here. He's going to investigate. We can't rule out anything until we hear something from him," Caldwell said.
The father, Mike McAtee, was flown to Cabell Huntington Hospital to be treated for his injuries. He is in critical condition.

ROANE COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A fire in Roane County left a mother dead and the father in critical condition.
It started about 11 a.m. Thursday along Circle Avenue in Spencer.
Spencer Police tell WSAZ.com when they got to the scene the second floor of the home was engulfed in flames.
Father, Mike McAtee, and his son had made it outside of the home.
But mother, Sara McAtee was still inside.
Firefighters had to battle the flames before they could find her body.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
