Bank Robbery Suspects Caught in Woods

PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) -- A pair of robbers held bank tellers at gunpoint and got away with cash, but their success was short-lived, State Police say.

Gloria Young never imagined accused bank robbers would use the woods behind her house as an escape route.

"Police pulled up in our driveway,” Young said. “There were six our eight of them. We didn't know what was going on."

Kentucky State Police say a little after 3 p.m. Friday, two men went into the U.S. Bank in Meta in Pike County wearing bandanas over their faces, showed a gun and demanded cash.

Witnesses told troopers the suspects then ran off behind the bank into the woods.

"They had went through the creek and up onto the mountainside," Trooper Shaun Little said.

State Police set up a perimeter.

About two hours after the robbery, Little says they found the suspects, 29-year-old Anthony Puett of Dorton and 28-year-old Anthony Roberts of Pikeville, about half a mile from the bank behind Young’s house.

"It happens I guess any place any more,” Young said. “Little small places are getting it about the same as big places."

Both suspects are charged with first degree robbery and are being held in the Pike County Detention Center.
