SISSONVILLE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A boil water advisory was issued Wednesday night for about 1,000 customers in the Edens Fork and Tuppers Creek area of Sissonville, according to a news release from West Virginia American Water.

The specific streets included are: Holmes Hollow Road, Kanawha Two Mile from Holmes Hollow to the end of the line, Copen Branch, Bald Knob Drive, Five Mile Road from Ravenall Road to Tate Hollow Road, Rosewood Way, Meyers Lane, Odessey Way, Little Debbie Lane, Gaiena Road, Centennial Drive, Silas Drive, Clara Drive, Applehill Lane, Tate Hollow Road, Turkey Pen Branch, Legg Fork from Sigman Fork to the end of the line, Ashville Lane and Hughart Drive.

The advisory was issued after extensive flushing in the area caused a water storage tank to drain.

Affected customers should boil their water before consumption until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms that may be present in the water. Customers are asked to bring water used for drinking, cooking, bathing and brushing teeth to a full boil for a minimum of one minute, then cool before use.

West Virginia American Water also recommends the following steps:

  • Throw away beverages and ice cubes if made with tap water.
  • Keep boiled water in the refrigerator for drinking.
  • Provide pets with boiled water after cooling.
  • Do not use home filtering devices in place of boiling or using bottled water; most home water filters will not provide adequate protection from microorganisms.
  • Use only boiled water to treat minor injuries.
