ORIGINAL STORY
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A burglar in Huntington was caught in the act, and the victim says the suspect was lucky to leave with his life.

During a break from work, Raymond Bayes went to his house on Roby Road Tuesday afternoon.

He says a girl was sitting in a car in his driveway, and Bayes saw that someone had broken into his home.

"I didn't know if there were five people in there or one," he said.

Bayes called 911, then went inside and grabbed a knife.

"I heard somebody struggling coming down the steps,” Bayes said.

Bayes says the suspect was carrying an air conditioner.

“When he came around, that's when I got him," Bayes said.

He told the burglar not to move.

"Then his girlfriend made some raucous in there,” Bayes said. “I kind of turned my head. When I did, he took off."

Bayes says he tried to stop the thieves one more time.

"I stood in front of the car, trying to keep them from moving ‘til the law got here, but they tried to run me over," he said.

Huntington police caught up with the suspect near Bridge Street in Guyandotte.

Police say the suspect got away on foot, but his car and the stolen property in it were retrieved.

“I hope police are able to find him and get him off the streets,” Bayes’ roommate Randall Adkins said.

Bayes says if this happens again, he'll be more aggressive with the perpetrator.

"He's lucky I'm not cleaning up his blood right now,” Bayes said. “Somebody else comes in here and I see them, they're dead. That's just the way it is."

Police are processing the stolen property. The victims have been told they will get it back soon.

There's no word on whether the female who was in the car will face charges.
