Businesses Waiting to Open After Do Not Use Ban is Lifted

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Businesses have been empty for four days with no water or customers and are just waiting for the okay to open back up.

Racks that are normally full of clothes are completely bare. Richard Leach is the co-owner of Gardner's Dry Cleaning. He says, "As of Friday, we wasn't sure if we could even run the boiler or anything and no laundry service can be done what-so-ever."

Bottled water replaces cups of coffee at Taylor Books downtown. "The café was closed so all those people stayed home and I've just been here playing it by ear," says manager, Dan Carlisle.

Businesses across the Kanawha Valley are on stand-by, waiting to open their doors after nearly four days with no water and no customers.

"I have about six bins of dry cleaning and five shirts to do. Most people aren't even looking for their clothes right now, they're just looking to take a bath and water and a place to eat and they're in the same situation we are. Everybody's on hold," says Leach.

The flushing process on Monday began with downtown Charleston, including businesses like Taylor Books. "We'll have to call some people in and get up and running again," says Carlisle. "As far as the coffee machines goes, it's just kind of flushing them out thoroughly, just running them all out."

In other zones like the West Side where Gardner's is located, Leach says, "We're basically on hold to wait for the water company to give us the go ahead."

Once restaurants complete the flushing process, they'll have to be re-inspected by the health department before they can offer full service to customers. The health department says they'll work with business owners to make sure inspections are done as quickly as possible.
