Carper: Freedom Industries Containment Wall Needed $1M in Repairs

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Kanwaha County Commission President Kent Carper says a containment wall at Freedom Industries was in need of $1m in repairs.

According to Carper the company had just changed hands.

In the list of transactions money was set aside to fix a containment wall.

According to Carper, "the place was not in good shape," and it was apparent the containment wall was in a state of disrepair.

A leak in a tank Thursday caused a chemical to seep into the Elk River causing a ban on water usage in nine counties where West Virginia American Water has customers.

Carper says that chemical was able to seep through, over, or under the faulty containment wall.
